Amanda Ballantyne is the director of the AFL-CIO Technology Institute. The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) is the largest federation of unions in the United States. It is made up of 57 national and international unions, together representing 12.5 million workers in every sector of the economy and region of the country. The AFL-CIO, through its allied organizations and workforce intermediary partnerships, operates the largest training network outside of the U.S. military and is a powerful leader in the global worker rights movement. Under Ballantyne’s leadership, AFL-CIO’s new Technology Institute is supporting unions to develop educational programs focused on how automation technologies, including artificial intelligence and related technologies, are reshaping work, and facilitating the involvement of unions and workers in research and development, policy advocacy, bargaining at the firm level, and enhancing worker training and apprenticeship programs.
